Terminal [Escape Room] Chapter 4, titled Trial and Error, places players inside a contaminated research laboratory. An announcer confirms that seismic activity polluted the water lines with hydrofluoric acid, leaving a 90-minute timer before the facility sprinklers deploy and end the run. Escaping requires gathering dominoes to access the fume hood, shrinking down to solve four sub-chambers, and redirecting ventilation piping.

Many puzzle values randomize between sessions. The underlying logic remains identical across playthroughs, while select steps feature static numerical answers.

Difficulty Selection

CCF Studios built two distinct versions of Trial and Error. Choosing the correct mode depends on team size and experience with logic games.

Standard Mode: Lab Room Keypads

Before interacting with the central machinery, players must unlock three supply drawers around the lab perimeter. Each drawer dispenses domino tiles and a bottle of water.

Checkers Board and Reagent Shelf

A checkers board sits on the counter displaying four black pieces across an eight-by-eight grid labeled A through H horizontally and 1 through 8 vertically. The black pieces encode the solution from top to bottom.

  1. Record the coordinates of each black checker piece. Example coordinate sets include 1G, 2F, 5C, 8B or 1C, 2D, 6F, 7C.
  2. Locate the matching slots on the Reagent Shelf across the room. Read the element name printed on the corresponding bottle.
  3. Check the lab's Periodic Table poster to extract the chemical symbol for each identified element.
  4. Combine the chemical abbreviations in top-to-bottom sequence to form an English word. Verified randomized outcomes include BURNER, ACTION, UPROAR, FAMINE, and UPRISE.
  5. Type the resulting word into the wall keyboard beside the reagent shelf to open the drawer.

Tic-Tac-Toe Beakers

Four ongoing tic-tac-toe games sit beside distinct glassware across the facility. The Beaker Clean Up poster dictates the exact sequence for reading each board:

  1. Cylindrical Beaker: situated in front of the Periodic Table.
  2. Triangular Flask: placed by the dollhouse counter.
  3. Circular Round Bottom Flask: located on the counter next to the checkers board.
  4. Test Tube: resting on the edge of the domino workstation.

Every board features three alignment dots along its frame. Rotate your view so these dots sit at the top edge. Identify which player has placed fewer marks to find whose turn is next, then identify the single open coordinate that creates an immediate three-in-a-row win. Input the four resulting grid locations in order on the tic-tac-toe keypad to unlock the second drawer.

Combustible Corrosive Cocktail Mass

The third keypad is beside the Chemical Closet door. The wall document lists recipe requirements for the Combustible Corrosive Cocktail. Ingredients must be weighed on the precision scale, with one scoop equaling four dashes.

  • 1 Scoop Water: 40.0g
  • 1 Scoop Gasoline: 28.4g
  • 1 Scoop Acid: 48.0g
  • 1 Dash Salt: 21.6g
  • 1 Dash Limestone: 23.0g
  • 1 Dash Sulfur: 19.0g
  • 1 Nail: 7.5g
  • 1 Glass Shard: 8.5g

Adding every measurement produces a total mass of 196.0 grams. The keypad accepts a four-digit decimal sequence: enter 1960 to release the final lab drawer items.

Domino Assembly and Fume Hood Activation

Unlocking the three drawers grants eleven domino tiles and three bottles of water. A fourth water bottle sits on the floor near the Periodic Table.

Empty all four water bottles into the tall glass jug beside the scale. The water level rises, floating the final two dominoes to the top opening.

Take the thirteen dominoes to the workstation table. Align the tiles end-to-end so touching halves display matching pip values. After completing the chain, exactly one domino tile remains in your inventory. Insert this leftover tile into the glowing slot on the Fume Hood. This powers the floor platforms and opens access to the shrink chambers.

The Four Shrink Chamber Walkthrough

Stepping onto the blue floor portal shrinks your character down to miniature size, granting access to four designated puzzle stations connected to the laboratory tables.

Station 1: The Dollhouse Screen Registry

Head up the stairs of the dollhouse to inspect the monitor bank. Four questions appear beside the terminal:

  1. The license number of the citizen sharing the Engineer's birthday.
  2. The ID of the citizen living in the same city as the Carpenter.
  3. The hometown of the citizen whose license contains four unique repeating pairs.
  4. The last name of the citizen whose ID is omitted from the approved list.

Locate the answers across the screens, then arrange the text answers in order and read them vertically column by column. The vertical letters spell four numbers from left to right: FIVE, FOUR, ZERO, NINE. Enter 5409 into the keypad, then step onto the green grow platform to return to the lab.

Station 2: Domino Simon Says

Enter the second portal to reach the oversized domino area. Approach the circular light device on the wall. Memorize and repeat eight consecutive light sequences. Once all eight rounds match, return through the portal.

Station 3: Giant Card Game Scoring

Enter the third portal to access the card table. A locked briefcase sits among oversized poker chips. Review pages 6 and 7 of the game rule booklet to calculate the maximum scoring six-card hand for each player using their private cards and the shared pool:

  • Player 1: Input code 128
  • Player 2: Input code 084
  • Player 3: Input code 086

Inputting these scores turns the briefcase indicators green and unlocks the internal button. Press the button and return to the main room.

Station 4: Building Blueprints

The fourth station leads down a toy city street toward a control console. The panel features red plus, green square, and blue minus buttons.

  1. Inspect the blueprint prices around the room and identify the three cheapest models: the 1-million, 2-million, and 3-million level buildings.
  2. Stand at the console and trigger the color buttons corresponding to those three buildings in order from lowest to highest price.
  3. Each building reveals three letters, totaling nine characters.
  4. Unscramble the letters to produce a valid word. Verified examples include JUDGEMENT, LABOURING, and LIMESTONE.

Enter the word into the wall monitor to open the laboratory Chemicals Closet.

Escaping Through the Ceiling Pipes

Return to full size and enter the unlocked Chemicals Closet. Collect three required tools from the floor: the Sledgehammer, the Chain Cutters, and the Wrench.

  1. Equip the Sledgehammer and smash the wall pipes around the room corners to collect twelve pipe segments.
  2. Equip the Chain Cutters to sever the chain securing the desk stool, adding the stool to your inventory.
  3. Place the stool on top of each lab table to climb up and reach the overhead pipe tracks.
  4. Fit all twelve pipe pieces into the ceiling layout, creating an uninterrupted conduit connecting the acid fire sprinklers directly into the Fume Hood intake.
  5. Use the Wrench on the wall to unscrew the board labeled The Game Room.
  6. Place the wooden board onto the Bunsen burner on the lab counter.

Burning the board triggers smoke, activating the automated fire suppression system. The routed piping carries the acid safely away from the room and breaches the vent grate inside the Fume Hood. Climb through the Fume Hood vent opening to escape and earn the Experiment Complete! badge.

Beginner Mode Puzzle Solutions

Beginner Mode alters the mechanics of each lab puzzle to remove complex math and multi-tier ciphers.

  • Crossword Word Keypad: Down clues feature TICTACTOE, PERIODIC, GAME, and SEVEN. Across clues feature MIXTURE, URANIUM, DOMINOES, and CHECKERS. The highlighted red boxes spell MOCKING.
  • Dice Keypad: Locate four dice around the room and read the top faces by side count (Cube = 4, Octahedron = 5, Dodecahedron = 9, Icosahedron = 1). Enter 4591.
  • Sudoku Blank Keypad: Read the center square coordinates from 1 through 9 to trigger the drawer.
  • Shrink Pad 1 (Dollhouse): Inspect the dog bed (4), TV (8), box (2), and lamp (1) to input 4821.
  • Shrink Pad 2 (Dominos): Place beakers on the scale. Order the five heaviest mixtures (C, A, G, E, D) to enter CAGED, then complete five rounds of Simon Says.

  • Final Escape: Open the closet and align the wire sections in the electrical box to vent the gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the 90-minute timer runs out in Chapter 4?

Running out of time causes the laboratory sprinklers to spray hydrofluoric acid across the room, ending the attempt and awarding the Experiment Failed... badge. Teams that own the Infinite Time gamepass bypass lobby resets and can continue working through the room.

Is the Standard Mode cocktail mass code always 1960?

The total mass of the Combustible Corrosive Cocktail equals 196.0 grams across Standard Mode playthroughs. Entering 1960 into the keypad directly unlocks the drawer without manually weighing the individual chemical beakers.

Can dominoes be rotated during the table assembly puzzle?

Interacting with a selected domino tile on the workstation allows players to rotate its orientation before placing it. Both ends must match the dot values of neighboring tiles along the entire chain until only the access key piece remains.
